Gilas Women finish 6th in the FIBA Asia Cup after losing to South Korea

MANILA, Philippines- In the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup on Saturday, the Philippines finished sixth after losing to South Korea, 80-71, in a classification game.

Even in the early stages of the contest at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre, Gilas Pilipinas displayed steely nerves against the perennial threat.

While the Nationals were down by double digits at halftime, they managed to close the gap to 68-71 halfway through the final frame, but their offense conked out at the worst possible time.

Khate Castillo and Jack Danielle Animam each finished with 12 points, while Afril Bernardino led all scorers with 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Gilas team was led by Duke standout and naturalized player Vanessa de Jesus, who scored five points on a 2-for-13 shooting night.

The Koreans were led by Park Jihyun’s 24 points. Kim Danbi, the Asian Games champion, was among the others to post double-digit scores in the effort.

Considering Gilas’ previous performances in the continental showcase, a 6th place finish is already a significant achievement.

Philippines’ relegation to Division A in 2015 has resulted in relegation matches and 7th place finishes in the Asia Cups.
